Sew Iconic!

I’ve always been a fan of the monochrome look. It simplifies getting dressed and is flattering on all body types. It’s an increasingly popular look and tons of inspiration can be found on the internet. This fashion trend has been around for decades. It can be demure or create a bold statement. When I came across this brilliant blue, faux fur, I immediately had a flashback to the iconic looks that fashion designer, Misa Hylton created for hip-hop legend, Lil’ Kim.

Different hues but still makes a statement

I decided to make a jacket after seeing the ocean blue fur coat that Lil’ Kim wore for one of the primary colors looks in the “Crush on You” video. My faux fur has a cobalt hue with flecks of midnight blue as an undertone.

Simple, with no collar and a zipper enclosure. Since the fabric has an embossed look, I wanted to keep the design to a minimal. I used an oldie but goodie pattern from my sewing stash. Vogue accessories pattern V8142. Unfortunately, this pattern is discontinued but there are plenty of jacket patterns that can be altered to a jacket of your liking. Patterns such as McCall’s M7637, and Simplicity 8418 both come to mind. You can easily leave the rib trim and collar accents off. Another option for jacket patterns can be found on Etsy. There are many PDF designers that offer a multitude of sewing patterns in the Etsy marketplace.

My jacket is fully lined, with pockets. I took extra care in lining up the front panels so the rows would look seamless when the zipper was closed. I cut a size large because I wanted it to be a little oversized. I was strategic in adding elastic inside the seams of the cuffs and the hemline. I wanted those areas to be cinched in a way that wasn’t obvious.

I love mixing textures with a monochrome look. I combined faux fur, velvet, denim, and sequins all in cobalt and navy-blue tones. I kept my earrings and shades to a minimal. Allowing the textured jacket to be the star. My jeans have black denim on the back and tie in my black boots to complete the look. It’s perfectly fine to incorporate a complimentary color near the same hue. It all adds dimension and interest!

Lastly, some of the adjectives that the color blue represents are trustworthy, calming, tranquility and serenity. Maybe that’s why I gravitated towards this color because that’s how I live my life.
