Making a tiered skirt is easy!

With no sewing pattern, I made a two-tiered skirt with pockets out of this beautiful African print. Essentially, you’re working with rectangle shapes which make it easy for measuring and sewing. The fabric is 45 inches wide, so I cut two full width rectangles measuring 18 inches (plus 2 1/2 inches for the elastic casing) in length for the top tier.

For the second tier, I cut three full width rectangles measuring about 21 inches allowing extra for my seam allowance and a small hem. I stitched two rows of basting stitches at the top to gather. This made for a nice full skirt.

Once I gathered the bottom tier, I was able to connect it to the top. I got this fabric from Amazon for $22.99 and it was 6 yards total! Since I only used about 2 yards, I have quite a bit left. I plan on making a tunic style dress for myself. I made a knotted headband with elastic casing at the neck, to go with the skirt.

The color pattern is so versatile that pairing tops and jackets over it can be endless. I stopped at just four different styles but could have kept going!

I love how you can customize a tiered skirt to your liking. With two, three or more tiers, you can have a mini, midi, or maxi skirt. The style is classic and ever so comfortable in the hot summer months. Making a tiered skirt is easier than you think!

Happy sewing!
