Floating Christmas tree

I’ve seen wreaths that hang over a mirror but hadn’t come across any trees. I decided to make my own by taking an evergreen swag and simply turning it upside down. Here’s what I did.

These are the items you’ll need:

Evergreen swag

Round block of floral foam (2.4 inches x 3.75 inches)

Fine gauge wire (able to handle up to 5 pounds)

Hot glue gun/ glue sticks or permanent bond glue i.e. E6000

Small tree limbs from outside

Pliers (regular or for jewelry-making)

Tree limb cutter or heavy-duty scissors

Butter knife

Battery operated lights

Various, small lightweight ornaments for decorating

Cover your workspace to catch any debris that may fall off your swag. I purchased an evergreen swag from JoAnn that had frosted limbs and sequins on it. I was so glad that my table was covered. It made my clean up super easy!

Use the pliers to pinch the sides of the loop. This will give it a less rounded shape and help with the insertion into the foam. Measure the length of the loop and use your knife to carve a slit into the foam. About 2/3rds of the way through. Place a small amount of glue or bond in the slit. *Note – flatten the back side of the foam and don’t secure any limbs to this area. I wish I had done that when I first made this. The circular shape tends to rock against the mirror until I hold it in place for a bit. A flattened back, with no limbs, would have helped secure it in place. Cut your tree limbs to the length of the foam. I collected sticks that were similar in size so they would align easily.

Secure the swag in the foam. Attach the tree limbs to the stump. Once the tree is assembled and dried, it’s time to decorate.

I used a strand of lights with a six-hour timer. Secure the battery pack to the branches with the floral wire or twist ties. This will prevent the weight of the batteries from pulling the tree down. Decorate it with ornaments.

Measure how far down you want the tree to hang from where it’s to be mounted. Double that length for your wire measurement. Wrap it around the top part of the tree and twist the open ends securely. Follow the instructions for proper installation of the hook. Make sure to hang the hook upside down. Right side up will allow the wire to slide off. Time to hang your finished project!

I love how it turned out! Beautification can help reduce stress and promote a healthier lifestyle. If you’re fortunate to have a safe and sound place to lay your head, make it your sanctuary.
