Change the ambience of a room!

Making your own curtains is a great way to get into sewing. They’re quick to make, great practice for straight stitch sewing and you can get the custom look that you want. I wanted to keep as much light as possible in this room, so I decided to add lightweight panels to each side of the window. I chose a warm fabric to accent the tones of caramel, honey, and chocolate brown colors in the room. I finished these curtains in an hour.

Here’s what I did.

I measured from the rod down to the floor and added 12 inches for a “puddle” effect. I bought 5- and 1/2-yards total. Folded the fabric in half and cut it for my two lengths. The fabric measured 58 inches wide. No need to trim it since the curtains will remain stationery. I pressed the side hems 1-and 1/2 inches.

I pressed a deep hem, measuring 4 inches, for the top and bottom of the curtains. I wanted stability for a cascading effect at the top and a billowy effect for the bottom. Stitch the sides first. Top and bottom should be stitched last.

I ordered a set of 1- 1/2-inch, metal drapery rings in oil-rubbed bronze from Amazon. 14 rings came in the package. Attach 7 rings to each curtain panel. I didn’t measure the exact layout of each ring. I just placed one on both ends and eye-balled the remaining 5 rings.

Keep it easy on yourself!

Time to hang them!

When the sunlight comes through the windows, the translucency of the fabric gives a warm glow throughout the room. I can really appreciate the lofty coziness that it creates. Making a home decorating item is a nice segway into sewing. Whether you’re new to the craft or are dusting off skills you acquired years ago!
