This skirt/ pants pattern has been in my stash for some years. Now more than ever, denim and cargo styles are featured everywhere. Fall is upon us and I’m here for all the denim garments I can make!
The pattern is a Vogue collaboration with designer, Marcy Tilton. The pattern number is V8499 and although it was first distributed in 2008, it can also be found on various websites under the pattern number V1731.
I chose a medium weight denim that I purchased from a local fabric store called, Discount Fabric Outlet in Clawson, Michigan. Definitely adjust the pattern to your height before cutting out the final pieces. The skill level is marked easy, but the mitered pockets may be slightly intimidating to some. If you just take your time and follow the pattern markings, you’ll be fine!
The skirt requires three 7″ zippers. I used 9″ zippers to not have the hassle of going around the zipper stop at the end. It’s much easier to get a closer stitch to the zipper teeth. Since I did a contrast topstitch, I wanted my zippers to match the thread. Plus, I love earthtone colors and knew that brown boots would be my go-to when styling this skirt! It also required 1 and 1/4″ yds. of 3/4″ wide elastic. I only used 7/8″ of a yard. Most patterns will give an elastic allowance to accommodate all sizes in the pattern. The last notion was a hook and eye closure to be sewn above the zipper. I moved my zipper up and did not need to install one.
Overall, I would definitely make this skirt again. The shaped hem at the bottom, coupled with the weight of the fabric, gives it a slight bubble effect. I also love that the pockets are functioning and provide storage if you need to keep your hands free. The length is perfect for these cooler months as we transition into winter. Another note about this pattern. I’ve also made view B (which are the ankle length pants) in linen. They were also easy to make, and I’ve worn them many times!
Happy sewing!
