A sequin skirt made easy!

I’ve been wanting a sequin, pencil skirt that embodied the colors of the holiday season. When I saw this stretch sequin fabric on http://www.moodfabrics.com, I knew it would be perfect! Its description and color are described as Flavio sequins – “rainbow”, but the actual colors are red, green, gold, silver and black. I made a few changes to the pattern that I used making it my own! That’s beauty of sewing. You can make something unique and customize it to your fit! Here’s what I did.

I ordered one yard of fabric but only used 3/4 of a yard. I made it a two-piece skirt once I eliminated the waistband. I used McCall’s pattern M8055 in View D. It’s the perfect mid length for my height since I’m only about 5’2″.

I lined the skirt with a poly-knit lining to eliminate hemming the bottom and to give it a better feel against the skin.

I pinned the elastic about a 1/2-inch overlay at the top of the skirt. I also added a 12-inch invisible zipper on the side to add interest to the skirt. You can leave it closed for a day look or open it for an evening look.

This took about an hour and a half to make. Since the sequins are small, you can stitch right through them. With larger sequins, you have to remove them from your seam allowance, or you will ruin your machine needle and have shards of sequins all over the place. I had minimal clean up that was mainly from cutting the skirt pieces.

I plan on making this skirt in a solid color and may make it in a maxi length. It’s a classic skirt that will stand the test of time. Whether it’s for the holidays or a formal affair, this skirt will carry you through multiple events!
