Sewing a vintage design from 1954

Vogue pattern V1023

I love period-style clothing! I think I was drawn to this pattern because it reminded me of a coat that my Great-grandmother would have worn. Gloves and all. I first made this coat in a traditional wool woven fabric with a polyester lining. I followed the pattern instructions exactly as is. Sleeves with a gusset, welt pockets and bound buttonholes are very indicative of the 1950’s. When I made it years ago, I was not an advanced sewist as I am now, but I was up for the challenge.

The first time that I made this coat I used a wool tweed fabric.

The colors were indicative of fall with tones of sunset red, rust orange, brown and beige.

Shoulder pads were optional, but I chose to include them to round out the shoulders. I wanted to give the shoulders a little bit of a lift since the wool was lightweight.

Fast forward to present day. I decided to make it again. I wanted a sherpa lined jacket ever since I made one for my brother last year. For my materials, I used denim, sherpa fleece and metal buttons. I knew that I wanted a vintage look but with a western twist.

The shade of thread used for the contrasting buttonholes, picks up the sherpa fleece lining perfectly!

Cozy as a blanket lining is just right for the colder months here in Michigan.

I Iove how this version of the jacket turned out. I’m ready for the fall!

Happy sewing!
