Oversized handbags are trending, but they are one of the easiest bags you can make. I had some extra denim fabric and wanted something lightweight in feel but not in color. An in-between season shoulder bag to transition from winter to spring. I went through my “oldie but goodie” stash of sewing patterns and found Vogue 7701. It’s from the year 2003 but it’s still available in the world of the internet. I’ve made shoulder bags from this pattern many times and it’s definitely a great pattern for a beginner sewist. Usually handbag/tote bag patterns aren’t ranked for a skill level. However, you should know the basics of sewing such as standard seam allowance, what weight of interfacing to use and zipper types.
I’ve made views A, B, and F from this patten. The fabric yardage for the bags range in 5/8 of a yard if using 45-inch-wide fabric or 1/2 of a yard if using 60-inch-wide fabric. A 12-inch zipper, interfacing and magnetic closure (for view F) round out the notions.
I’ve used faux fur, brocade, and faux leather fabrics for the bags. I’ve also embellished the straps and welts of the faux fur with decorative trim.
Since I’ve had practice with making this particular shoulder bag, I’ve made changes in the construction of the lining and addition of pockets. I now know how to leave the lining open on the inside to be able to attach it to the zipper by machine. The pattern calls for hand stitching to attach the lining. I also added two pockets with a cinched elastic top for easy access to get in and out of.
I used the classic cognac brown thread as a contrast against the dark indigo blue. With a denim that dark, you need a contrast for a little pop of color!
I’ve seen luxury brand denim bags that range in price up to the $1,000’s. Essentially, denim is cotton. Unless you have everything that money can buy and a really nice retirement fund, buy what you want. But if you’re inclined, do try making your own bag. Not everything has to be luxury.
